The Core Competencies are sets of intellectual, personal, and social and emotional proficiencies that all students need in order to engage in deep, lifelong learning. Along with literacy and numeracy foundations, they are central to BC’s K-12 curriculum and assessment system and directly support students in their growth as educated citizens. There are 3 Core Competencies: Communication, Thinking and Personal and Social.
As students learn, they should regularly assess their growth through self-reflection and self-assessment. Teachers support students this growth in self-assessment by intentionally noticing, naming, and connecting the Core Competencies with their learning in school and beyond.
